Boycotts

Let's get this out in the open: Some people are calling for boycotts of certain products or stores. But is there any product or company that is all bad? For instance, one of our members wants us to boycott Coca-Cola for buying up water rights in developing countries to bottle water to sell to us. But, how many times do I see people drinking bottled water from little plastic bottles at Democratic events? And, what about other efforts by Coca-Cola? Many dislike Wal-Mart. But, did you know that Wal-Mart is leading major retailers in requiring its suppliers to limit packaging, and is working with small producers in South America to buy fair trade products?
Recently I (Alan Blakley) met President Uribe of Colombia. One of the things he said is that they are doing all they can to eliminate drug trade, but we need todo our part and get rid of demand. If there weren't such a demand for stupid little plastic bottles of water because we're too [fill in the blank] to drink tap water or filter our own water, maybe Coca-Cola wouldn't be buying up water rights.
Is anything simple? Your thoughts, please. [Show More]

Hillary Supporters and Barack Obama

I (Alan Blakley) was a Hillary Delegate to the Texas State Convention, but when Hillary told us in June to support Barack Obama, I became an ardent supporter of Barack. How can anyone who heard her clear message then or who actually listened to her speech at the National Convention not plan to vote for and actively campaign for Barack Obama. I'd be interested in your thoughts. At the National Convention, Hillary asked "what did you campaign for? me? or for what I stand for?" It's what Barack stands for. [Show More]

Robert Pruett and the Commissioners - Is someone lying?

Who's telling the truth about whether the commissioners and the sheriff conspired to severely limit gun rights? Or does it matter? Why would't the commissioners contact the sheriff about something that would impact law enforcement? If they didn't, doesn't it show they have no confidence in him?

If you don't blockwalk

What are some other ways to influence the election if you don't blockwalk (either because your precinct is too spread out or you just don't like to do it)? Here's one idea - ask merchants where you shop to put up a sign for your favorite candidate. Even if they say "no," you've got an opportunity to tell them why you like that candidate.

Plastic Bags and Randalls

Randalls now sells cloth bags for 99 cents. Personally, I hate plastic bags - do the clerks get paid a bonus based upon using extra bags? One time I bought 8 items and the clerk tried to use six bags. I objected strenuously. Anyone else?

Bush = McCain

On July 13th, Mark Sanford, when asked for a difference between Bush and McCain said he was drawing a blank. Has anyone answered the question?

Chaos Theory

Chaos Theory teaches us that the flapping of the wings of a butterfly in New Zealand has an impact on the weather in Texas. In other words, everything is connnected and nothing is simple. I am struck that policy is similar. For instance, recently I saw a statement that undocumented workers is related to minimum wage. If minimum wage were higher, given the unemployment situation in much of our country, US citizens would want the jobs that undocumented workers are now taking. Of course, restaurant prices would be higher and the cost of yard care would be higher. But then, maybe we'd do our own yard work instead of going to the gym for exercise. The gyms could become health food stores. Do only simple people see simple solutions to simple problems?

Limiting Liability of Telecoms

Someone recently sent this to me. I think it is worth discussion:
If you are receiving this, it is that I want your opinion on a >>> political matter. Recently, the House of Representatives voted on a >>> bill to immunize from civil lawsuits AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and other >>> companies who helped Bush illegally spy on Americans. It passed the >>> House and among those who voted for it were many Democrats including >>> Nick Lampson, Gene Green, and Al Green. I was wondering what you >>> thought of this as well as on a promise from Obama to vote for the >>> telecom immunity bill when it comes to a vote in the Senate. >>> >>> ---------Nicholas DiLucci, delegate to the Texas Democratic State >>> Convention, Senate District 17, Harris County, Precinct 284

Immigration

What do you think about immigration reform? I'm not talking about what to do about people in this country illegally. I am an attorney who has navigated very complicated legislation and administrative rules yet I find the immigration laws almost incomprehensible. Can you imagine what someone from another country who (like most of our ancestors) wants to come here faces. What should be done? [Show More]

Super Precincts

What do you think about super precincts? Recently, due to efforts of Brazoria County Democrats, the plan to have super-precincts has been scrapped, at least for this presidential election season. Super-precincts would be places where anyone could vote, similar to early voting. However, there would be fewer of them, and they would likely not be in older neighborhoods or poorer or more rural areas (because facilities large enough may not exist there). They'd also be harder for older people and people with limited mobility to get to. On the other hand, those of us who work and live at opposite ends of the county could vote easier. What do you think? Are they a good idea, bad idea? Is there a way to make them work?
Irrespective, congratulations to Brazoria Democrats - we're making a difference!! [Show More]
