Early Voting Turnout

People have been voting in record numbers in the counties around Houston.  Will this have a significant impact on outcome?  Are people voting straight party or for just the "top" of the ballot, then going home?

Second Presidential Debate

John McCain said the solution to the Social Security problem is simple and everyone knows it.  I must not be part of everyone.

Also, I'm not his friend, I wish he'd take a behaviour modification course to eliminate "my friends" from his vocabulary.

We can't let him get elected president.

Racism Still Exists

{The following was written by Johnathan Sublet, a Brazoria County Democrat.  Because it is too long for the blog, it is cut and you will need to read the comments to read it in its entirety.  The first four comments are the continuation of Mr. Sublet's thoughts.  This is well worth reading.  Please do not add your comments here, they will appear in the middle of Mr. Sublet's text.  Add them to the entry above - Alan Blakley}

Very often I hear how race is not an issue anymore and that we (African Americans) just need to let it go. In these conversations I express the thought that the issue of race is still very real and alive. Being a young African American male has afforded me to see things from quite a perspective. It saddens me that race is still an issue but it is.  I read articles like the one I have linked (http://news.yahoo.com/page/election-2008-political-pulse-obama-race) and I just tear up. We live in a country where over 70% of the people say they are Christian but we still see things like this. How do they match up? Christianity is based on a God who loved those who did not deserve to be loved even to the point of sending His son to die for them. The fact that we call ourselves Christians means that we are supposed to be Christ like meaning imitating the character of Christ.  Meaning we too are supposed to be able to love those who may differ in opinion from us. Meaning we are supposed to love them as we love ourselves. Meaning that we are supposed to be for the betterment of our brothers regardless of race, creed, or color.

Palin as Commander in Chief and Energy Expert

Campbell Brown this evening interviewed an official of the McCain administration who called Palin an expert in energy.  Is she?  I haven't heard this before.

Also, he said that since Alaska has a national guard, she is commander in chief of it and is responsible for outfitting and deploying it.  Campbell pushed him for ONE decision that she has made and he just kept repeating things.  What is the relationship between a governor and commander in chief and does this qualify her to be president in case something happens to McCain?

Gov. Palin and McCain's judgment

Mark Campos suggests that we not heap abuse on Gov. Palin.  Perhaps he is correct.  HOWEVER, I think we need to go after McCain with Katrina-like force for: (1) his lack of judgment, cynicism, and impulsiveness in picking someone with no experience (as we say in Texas, "bless her heart").  Here she is trying to care for a Down Syndrome Child and learn how to be governor of a tiny state and McCain offers her the VP spot.  Of course, she'll say yes even though 90% of the adult population of the United States is just as competent ("bless her heart").  and, (2) with all the garbage that McCain's been putting out about Sen. Obama's lack of experience, he chooses her?

We need to make this about McCain's lack of judgment.

Boycotts

Let's get this out in the open:  Some people are calling for boycotts of certain products or stores.  But is there any product or company that is all bad?  For instance, one of our members wants us to boycott Coca-Cola for buying up water rights in developing countries to bottle water to sell to us.  But, how many times do I see people drinking bottled water from little plastic bottles at Democratic events?  And, what about other efforts by Coca-Cola?  Many dislike Wal-Mart.  But, [Show More]

Robert Pruett and the Commissioners - Is someone lying?

Who's telling the truth about whether the commissioners and the sheriff conspired to severely limit gun rights?  Or does it matter?  Why would't the commissioners contact the sheriff about something that would impact law enforcement? If they didn't, doesn't it show they have no confidence in him?

If you don't blockwalk

What are some other ways to influence the election if you don't blockwalk (either because your precinct is too spread out or you just don't like to do it)?  Here's one idea - ask merchants where you shop to put up a sign for your favorite candidate.  Even if they say "no," you've got an opportunity to tell them why you like that candidate.

Plastic Bags and Randalls

Randalls now sells cloth bags for 99 cents.  Personally, I hate plastic bags - do the clerks get paid a bonus based upon using extra bags?  One time I bought 8 items and the clerk tried to use six bags.  I objected strenuously.  Anyone else?

Chaos Theory

Chaos Theory teaches us that the flapping of the wings of a butterfly in New Zealand has an impact on the weather in Texas.  In other words, everything is connnected and nothing is simple.  I am struck that policy is similar.  For instance, recently I saw a statement that undocumented workers is related to minimum wage.  If minimum wage were higher, given the unemployment situation in much of our country, US citizens would want the jobs that undocumented workers are now taking.  Of course, restaurant prices would be higher and the cost of yard care would be higher.  But then, maybe we'd do our own yard work instead of going to the gym for exercise.  The gyms could become health food stores.  Do only simple people see simple solutions to simple problems?

Limiting Liability of Telecoms

Someone recently sent this to me.  I think it is worth discussion:

If you are receiving this, it is that I want your opinion on a

>>> political matter. Recently, the House of Representatives voted on a
>>> bill to immunize from civil lawsuits AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and other
>>> companies who helped Bush illegally spy on Americans. It passed the
>>> House and among those who voted for it were many Democrats including
>>> Nick Lampson, Gene Green, and Al Green. I was wondering what you
>>> thought of this as well as on a promise from Obama to vote for the
>>> telecom immunity bill when it comes to a vote in the Senate.
