Boycotts
Let's get this out in the open: Some people are calling for boycotts of certain products or stores. But is there any product or company that is all bad? For instance, one of our members wants us to boycott Coca-Cola for buying up water rights in developing countries to bottle water to sell to us. But, how many times do I see people drinking bottled water from little plastic bottles at Democratic events? And, what about other efforts by Coca-Cola? Many dislike Wal-Mart. But, did you know that Wal-Mart is leading major retailers in requiring its suppliers to limit packaging, and is working with small producers in South America to buy fair trade products?
Recently I (Alan Blakley) met President Uribe of Colombia. One of the things he said is that they are doing all they can to eliminate drug trade, but we need todo our part and get rid of demand. If there weren't such a demand for stupid little plastic bottles of water because we're too [fill in the blank] to drink tap water or filter our own water, maybe Coca-Cola wouldn't be buying up water rights.
